PAS Phlebotomy Program

The Porterville Adult School Phlebotomy program is a one semester program that includes a 40 hour, one week long externship.
Topics covered include:
- Understand California Law regarding Phlebotomy in the State of California.
- Be able to properly identify patients and specimens and understand the overall importance of accuracy in patient care.
- Be able to select the proper equipment for phlebotomy procedures.
- Have a knowledge of the various tube additives and the importance of the correct order of draw.
- Know how to properly dispose of sharps, needles and waste.
- Understand infectious disease control, biohazards, universal precautions, and safety.
- Understand and return knowledge of anti-coagulation theory.
- Understand and be able to correct preanalytical errors in blood collection.
- Understand basic concepts of communication, interpersonal, relations, and professional behavior.
- Understand ethical considerations regarding health care as it relates to phlebotomy.
- Have knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on the circulatory system.
- Be able to correctly collect blood samples.

Entrance Requirements: High
School Diploma or High School Equivalency is required to enter into the program. Prior medical
training or experience
recommended but not required.

Course Length
One semester
+40 hours of clinical laboratory training (Externships)
Class Time
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 5:30-8:30 pm.
